She can Read Reality Television

She can read reality television with uncanny ability. Five minutes into
the program she knows that the gay chef, the one with the balding
mohawk, will be asked to leave, told to pack his knives. The vagaries
of throwaway statements are her tealeaves. She sees the expressions of
judges, the subtleties of editing. She never misses. The selected
tearfully packs his knives, as was preordained.

Written by Sean T. Rogers

Read by J.R. Blackwell

Hi Everyone

Voices of Tomorrow has gone on temporary hiatus. I am working on my Masters thesis(specifically gender and race in the work of Octavia Butler) and it eats up all my time, including my time usually reserved for podcasting. I should be back with your weekly stories in June 2007.

Sorry for the long wait folks, but as some of you may know, this is an unpaid project. Sometimes things like getting a diploma and working to pay the rent get in the way of even my most beloved projects. I am very pleased for your support with this podcast. Your comments and feedback have been most appricated.

When we come we will have a new theme song, new stories, and hopefully an announcement about future projects.

I hope that you will stick with us!

The Life of a Venusian Cowgirl

The life of every Venusian Cowgirl is circular. Moxie was told this repeatedly when she signed up. To drive the point home, a silk-screened sampler saying as much was set on the opposite wall of the entrance portal to her new apartment. Moxie put down the boxes of clothes she was carrying, hooked her thumbs into the loops of her jeans, and stared at the imitation cross-stitch. It entranced her so much that she didnât even notice her brother coming in until he started yelling.

The van comes for me at the usual time. I imagine myself as the driver must see me, a doll with matching parts, standing in front of buildings that are coated with red sand. I pull my coat around me but the cold wind climbs under and up my bare legs. I am wearing the dress that my mother saved for, the one I do not eat in, the one I keep laid out at the foot of my couch, the one that my grandmother presses formaldehyde in to keep it fresh.

Selection

âSex complicates things.â Professor Dawkins looked at Joe, whose broad shoulders nearly touched the sides of his tiny book-lined office. Joe was from one of the Midwestern public schools that concentrated on test scores, leaving students with a broad range of knowledge, but little depth. âSex adds an extra element to the process of reproduction, and although that allows for greater variance, simplistic asexual reproduction is still the most popular model.â

In A Nest Of Ice And Snow

Hongping watched a small child flounce across the glacier floor. The furry grey snowsuit the child was sealed into kept it from going faster than a clumsy amble, but it didnât seem to mind. It was charging toward a huddle of summarily swaddled children. Waving its arms like that, the handless sleeves of the snowsuit made it look like some half-formed bird about to take flight.

Where the Wild Horses Run

Even in the heart of the city, Rene is in the open places. His feet splash in streams, not gutters, and his ears feel the whistle of the wind and not the cry of sirens.
Escape Pod: The Uncanny Valley!

Monday, Escape Pod Magazine released a 365 Tomorrows story, The Unncanny Valley, written by Jared Axelrod. Steve Eley's reading is funny and clever and brings this story to life.

The Creative Commons licence that Escape Pod uses allows me to take the recording and share it with you on our feed. This is great, since it's a fantastic recording.

If you haven't visited Escape Pod, I seriously suggest you check it out. Great fiction, great audio presentation and great people running the show.

You can visit Escape Pod by going to: http://escape.extraneous.org/

Oh yeah, and like Voices of Tomorrow, it's totally free.
I hope you enjoy this special Escape Pod reading of The Uncanny Valley!

Special Episode: Outtakes

Voices of Tomorrow is proud to present our flubs, errors, mistakes, witty remarks and foul language, as recorded during the readings of our stories for this podcast.

Many thanks to J. Loseth, B. York, Josie Yaller, Brendan Dalton and Jared Axelord for lending their voices, flubs and all. Stories are grand, but friends such as these are without price.

Enjoy!
